Dune: Worm Attack

In late 2018 I was invited to work with Director, Denis Villeneuve, and Production Designer, Patrice Vermette, on the project of a lifetime: Dune. They asked me to explore the quality of light and atmosphere through a series of key scene illustrations based on storyboard sequences from the masterful Sam Hudecki.

This image focuses on the sand worm as it reveals itself for the first time, erupting from the desert to consume the stranded spice harvester as Paul Atreides and Gurney Halleck watch from the boarding ramp of a circling ornithopter. I wanted to emphasize the sense of 'slowness' with which an event of this immense scale might unfold. The ground sinks away as sand cascades down from the edges of the mouth like a waterfall.

All of my work on the show features amazing designs from other artists, this one includes early versions of George Hull's spice crawler and ornithopter, as well as the beautiful stillsuit design from Joseph Cross.

The project is a real highlight in my career, I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate so closely with such talented filmmakers and artists.
