Dune: Duncan Idaho Arrives on Arrakis

In an early draft of the script, the film opened on Idaho jumping from his ship at the edge of space to the desert planet below to begin his search for the Fremen as part of his peace mission.

This illustration shows Idaho, moments after touching down safely with the help of his suspensor belt, looking out across Arrakis for the first time as his ship passes into the distance overhead.

The desert needed to feel dangerous, like a vast ocean, with 'islands' of rock that could provide brief moments of safety from the worms. The grey, muddy atmosphere and 'boring' white sky were core to Denis' vision for Arrakis, and this image really helped to solidify the look of the desert for me.

The sequence was shot on location in the Jordanian desert, but ultimately it was cut from the film. I thought Jason Momoa was fantastic as Duncan Idaho, I found some extra images of him in Jordan looking 👌 on his YouTube channel.

The costume in my illustration was based on an early design sketch by Joseph Cross and as with all of these images I had the pleasure of working with storyboards by Sam Hudecki.
